The poem was originally written and published in Latin, and was translated and published into English in the same year. 'An Election Ball' is a burlesque poem about the Bath society of the eighteenth century. The English part of the text is written in a Somerset dialect. The poem's theme had been suggested to him at the literary gatherings of the Batheaston Literary Circle. Written by Christopher Anstey, an English poet, who is known for also writing in Latin. He is well known for his poem 'The New Bath Guide', and for his public life in Bath, which inspired his satirical poems. Illustrated by Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, a garden designer and artist. Disbound. Externally, the outer leaves are lightly age-toned, with only a few marks, marks a little heavier to the Latin part. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot and odd mark. Frontispiece is lifting to the head, with two closed tears. Prior owner's ink inscription to the tail of page 36 of the English part. Small repair to the reverse of the title page to the Latin part, and a small prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page.
