A work discussing the Martyrs of Gorkum. The Martyrs of Gorkum were a group of nineteenth Dutch Catholics who were hanged on the 9th July 1572. They were hung in the town of Brielle during the sixteenth century religious wars, by militant Dutch Calvinists. The event that led directly to these events was the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish rule. In 1572, the Netherlands were in open revolt against the Spanish rule, and there was internal rivalry in the country within the Protestants denominations, with the Calvinists eventually suppressing the Lutherans. In June, Gorkum fell, and nine Franciscans were captured by rebels, as well as two lay brothers from the same friary, and the parish priest and his assistant. Later, more people were added to those captures. They were transferred to Brielle, and on the journey the nineteen were exhibited to the curious for money. They were all interrogated, but all remained firm in their faith. Despite a letter pardoning them from Prince of Orange William the Silent, all nineteen men were hanged. After their deaths, there was a shrub of nineteen white flowers that sprung up on the site, and it is said that many miracles took place on the site. In 1675 there was a beatification of the martyrs, and were elevated to saint. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Ex Bibliotheca Seminarii S. Joannis&apos. In a full vellum binding.
