This shows an interesting view on how Scotland was developing as a country in the nineteenth century. It suddenly became a leader in modern industry, which happened quite unexpectedly. The population of the country grew rapidly in this century, going from around 1.6 million in the 1801 census, to 4.4 million in the 1901 census. The economy began to industrialise after being long based on agriculture, with the leading industry being the spinning and weaving of cotton, and also coal mining. Because of this, there was a growing emphasis on public health and welfare, due to the rapid housing being built that became more cramped, as the housing and provision for public health did not keep up pace with the growing population. The living conditions in some of the cities were notoriously bad, with a high infant mortality rate, and growing rates of tuberculosis. These pamphlets show the interested of Scottish politics during these years, and show how they were trying to adapt the country to the industrial revolution.
