Description: Birmingham, John Thompson, 1791. First edition. Cloth. A very scarce first edition of this account of the 1791 Birmingham Riots, presided over by Richard Perryn. A very scarce work. The first edition of this work. An account of the 1791 Priestley Riots, or the Birmingham Riots of 1791. The rioters were rioting against religious dissenters, most notably the controversial Joseph Priestley. The riots started with an attack on the Royal Hotel in Birmingham on the 14th July and ending on the 17th July 1791. Richard Perryn presided over the trials a the Warwick Assizes on the 23rd and 24th of August 1791. He was a Welsh judge who went on to become the baron of the exchequer. Bookplate to the front pastedown, stamp to the boards, stamp to the title page and stamp to the top, fore, and bottom edges, all from the Law Library of Los Angeles County. In a quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Institutional stamps to the boards, top, bottom, and fore edge. A little loss to the spine label. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Institutional label to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot and mark. Puncture marks to the textblock close to the gutter. Stamp to the title page. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
