This scarce pamphlet outlines the history of this particular area of Al Jazirah and the schemes for this area prior to the Gezira Scheme. The author discusses agricultural cultivations, administration, the plan of irrigation and the economic effect and cost of the work. The Gezira Scheme was started by the British while the area was governed as a part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. It involves water from the Blue Nile being distributed through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers. This report has some interesting provenance as it is from the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan. With his inscription to the front wrap. A fascinating look into the start of this pioneering piece of engineering. In the original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart.
