Edited by Abbe Perau, wood-engraved head- & tail-pieces, 84 engraved plates and plans, contemporary hand-coloured, 62 folding. The plates include uniforms, flags, weapons and equipment, fortification and battle plans etc. Only some copies have coloured plates. Fine copy on large laid paper of one of the great classics on the army of the ancien régime, in a fine binding. The count of Saxe gives a detailed description of the costumes and equipment of the army of Louis XV, its qualities and its defects, his original ideas on war, the hierarchical relations in the army, the mode of recruitment of the men in the idea of constituting effective and faithful troops. Maurice de Saxe, 1696 - 1750, was a notable soldier, officer and a famed military commander of the 18th century. The illegitimate son of Augustus II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. He initially served in the Army of the Holy Roman Empire, then the Imperial Army, before finally entering French service. De Saxe became a Marshal and even Marshal General of France. He is best known for his deeds in the War of the Austrian Succession and especially for his decisive victory at the Battle of Fontenoy..
