Engraved vignet on the title page, old ownership name on top of the title page, binding skilfully rebacked with vellum spine labels neatly lettered in script, title dust- soiled, otherwise in fresh state, firm copy. Martin Bucer (1491-1551) was a man of many callings, he was pastor, ecclesiastical negotiator, ecumenical statesman, and with Jacob Sturm the main architect of the Reformation in Strasbourg. He served as a professor in the Strasbourg Gymnasium and from the earliest days on his lectures were expositions of biblical books. Many of these lectures later formed the substance of his biblical commentaries. At first he was a disciple of Luther, later mediator between Luther and Zwingli, supplying an important connecting link between the English and the German Reformation. He was invited to England by Cranmer in 1549, received by Edward VI, and appointed Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge. One of his numerous commissions in England was the revision of the first English book of common prayer. The 'Scripta Anglicana' or 'Tomus Anglicanus' as it is also called contains all the works published in England, with some earlier writings and many important contemporary memorials of him. The editor Conrad Hubert, Bucer's friend intended to publish the complete works in ten folio volumes, but only this reached the press, the project being aborted through the influence of the Lutheran party.
