(Zeer fraaie uitgave van dit monumentale werk van Jan Luyken (1649-1712). De prentbijbel bevat afbeeldingen van gebeurtenissen uit zowel het Oude als het Nieuwe Testament en zijn voorzien van een onderschrift in het Nederlands en het meerendeel tevens in het Frans. Het werk is gedrukt op royaal papier en bestaat uit een titelpagina plus voorrede met een index van de gravures en vervolgens de 62 dubbel-paginagrote gravures, waarvan 61 van de hand van Luyken. De eerste uitgave van deze prentbijbel verscheen in 1708 bij Pieter Mortier te Amsterdam. Dit exemplaar betreft uitgave van Johannes Covens en Corneille Mortier welke in 1732 verscheen met Franse tekst. Gebonden in een zeer aantrekkelijke, originele leren band, versierd met goud-bestempeling op zowel de rug als de platten. Première édition française particulièrement recherchée de cette histoire de l’Ancien et du Nouveau Testament mise en image par le théologien, peintre, dessinateur et graveur hollandais Jan Luyken (1649-1712). ’ouvrage parut pour la première fois en hollandais en 1729. Il est divisé en 2 parties et contient au total 67 planches sur double page, dont 5 cartes, et 30 gravures dans le texte, dessinées et gravées par Jan Luyken. Chaque gravure est accompagnée de descriptions « qui éclaircissent plusieurs endroits de l’Ecriture, qui arrêtent souvent le Lecteur en conferant les planches de la Bible avec la Bible même » (préface). Les 62 scènes bibliques sont légendées en français et en néerlandais. Les deux titres sont imprimés en rouge et noir et comportent une vignette identique dessinée et gravée par Bernard Picart, datée de 1730. Bel et rare exemplaire en cuir de la fin du XVIIIe siècle. 2 parts in one volume, large Folio, H. 48 x W. 31 x D. 4,5 cm, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved, folding frontispiece. The book is divided into 2 parts and contains a total of 67 plates on a double page, including 5 maps, and 30 engravings in the text, drawn and engraved by Jan Luyken. Each engraving is accompanied by descriptions which shed light on several places in Scripture, which often stop the Reader in conferring the plates of the Bible with the Bible itself (preface). The 62 biblical scenes are captioned in French and Dutch. Beautiful contemporary leather binding. David Martin (1639 - 1721) was a French protestant who fled his country after the revocation of the ''Edict de Nantes''. He was the author of the French text of this so-called Print Bible, which was a running commentary to the numerous illustrations. The text was translated in Dutch and used already in 1700 by the publisher Pieter Mortier for his ''Large Mortier Bible''. In 1703 he published the text, with illustrations again in a smaller format, '' the small Mortier Bible'', also called the ''Jan Luyken bible''. This 1732 copy is the first French edition..
