Gilt on chipped black ownership band (Louis A Reed?) (See ownership signature p. 83). Other ownership notations incl F.W.G.P. on spine and same as signature on FFEP, dated Columbia, Mo. March 1853. Remnants of brown protective wrapper incl tape on paste-downs & damage to rear free end-paper w/ remnant adhering to spine that covers part of the maroon title band but not the lettering. Extensive preface, contents and index. One-page advertisement to the (London) 1797 edition. Two-page 1833 Chitty preface. First few and last few pages show chipping and stains, esp at the front. Scattered notations in pencil. Bizarre page-numbering system or lack thereof (page numbers often repeated or typeset incorrectly (483 for 348)). Correct numbering installed in smaller type-face at base of each page. Fair.
