Thick heavy hardback, quarto, 8 x 10 5/8 inches, dark brown 3/4 leather binding (gilt spine titling) & dark brown pebbled cloth covers, pp [xxiv], 65 through 1039, Fair condition. Strange page numbering but nothing seems to be missing: Part I, Daviess County begins on p. 65 (facing page is photographic plate of the Daviess County Courthouse in Gallatin) + Part II, Gentry County begins on p. 213 + Part III, Biographical begins on p. 331. Only Index is index of names at the front of the book and it references only names that appear in Part III. Couple of minor problems early in the book: one of the portraits preceding the title page had a tear in the lower margin area (now repaired w/ archival paper tape) & title page has a fore-edge margin area crease that runs at a long angle. The binding is sound and square w/ hinges intact, the book is generally very clean inside and out incl no previous owner names/writing/bookplates, and there isn't much external wear. The gilt spine titling is in a large font (5/16ths inch tall), and is easily legible despite being dulled. The nasty problem with this book is that 8 of the plates/photo portraits in a center portion of the Part III Biographical section have been defaced severely with a pencil tip (usually a very bad scratch or two but w/ one plate badly torn). Damage found from plate facing p 520 through plate facing p 720, a 200 page span that contains 8 additional plates that were not affected. I ve taken notes on the 16 plates in this area of the book and have also determined that the damage was done working from the back to the front of the book with some signs of pencil lead marking, and since I found a broken (dulled) pencil lead tip in the gutter of the book just behind one of the plates, the defacement perhaps continued with a broken pencil. Damage was severe enough (and deep enough) to affect some pages of text adjacent to the plates in most instances. Book being sold "As Is". All items shipped with very careful packaging. Due to size and weight, Priority or International order will require additional postage. Fair.
