Title: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
Description: Grosset & Dunlap publishers, with the Bobbs copyright of 1911 (early reprint). 1911. Hardcover . Hardback, 12mo, appx 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches, black and gilt on red cloth, pp [viii] + 357 + 2 pages of ads, VG+/no dj. Very nice copy with cover design matching the 1911 Bobbs US 1st, though Bobbs employed white titling and a blind embossed phantom, while the G&D issue uses black titling and a glit-stamped phantom. Spine also titled in black and is gilt-decorated as well (theatrical mask). This copy very nice exterior with no major detractions - generally very clean, square corners, front cover in impressive condition. Sole exterior imperfection of very light moisture signs: fore-edges of text block very light splash stain near upper corners with very minor signs of the spill to back cover and two droplets showing very minor effects to front cover (one near top corner and one partially hitting near the tail of the phantom's cloak, though you have to look close to notice any of the moisture effects at all). Spine - red cloth very slight color shift (lightened up a bit from sunning) and very light bumps at the ends. Interior tight binding with hinges intact + text, illustrations, frontis tissue all crisp and clean. Two names to front pastedown: one in pencil signed at an angle dating to appx the 1940's (knowing the estate it came from) & another along the top edge, vintage embellished script in black ink "P.M. Raneuchene, Wibaux, Mont." (unsure of spelling). Top corner of ffep appears to be bookseller's original price in pencil (could be erased). Interior also two top corners folded as bookmarks. Very Good. Signed by Author(s).
