Title: The Raft - Living Letters From The Famous Living Dead, Written Through Harrie Vernette Rhodes
Description: Chicago, New Publishing Company, 1929. 1929, 1st Edition. Hardcover . Hardback, small octavo, appx 5 1/2 x 8 inches, orange titles on blue cloth, VG-/no dj. Mostly very minor soil and wear, though small bump to head of spine + small scuff along top edge of front board there. Blue of spine cloth a little tanned. Binding solid, hinges intact, interior quite nice. Inscribed and SIGNED by author on FFEP: "To my friend, Wm. Stanford. Listen for the silent voice.Expand and radiate, Harrie Vernette Rhodes." I'm not sure (at all) if this would've been inscribed to the young William Bedell Stanford, Irish classical scholar, but no doubt a possibility. If actually so, it could perhaps be said that Stanford, having authored a study of Aeschylus (AESCHYLUS IN HIS STYLE - A Study in Language and Personality), might have received from this book some small bit of a seed of scholarly curiosity or methodology. Photo frontis of author. Author's dedication page quotes Gautama Buddha. Twenty-five "contributions" from beyond the grave, each featuring a plate on glossy stock followed by 2 or 3 or 4 pages of commentary. Included are: Buddha, Confucius, Diogenes, Pythagoras, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Mark Twain, Longfellow, Milton, Schubert, Shakespeare, Rudolph Valentino, etc. The front cover is titled: The Raft: It's Cargo - More Life! , Very Good. Inscribed by Author.
