Fragile, but the binding remains uncompromised. Interior nice. Light salmon colored covers show a little soiling, a sticker ghost near the top corner of the front cover and a localized area of moderate chipping to the fore-edge of the front cover (extending up from the lower corner). Chipping along very thin spine. Discussion (or mention made) of tie replacement in the Eastern Division, direct connection with St. Paul, a Sauk Rapids to Brainerd connection, extension into Montana, coal outcroppings in the west, fleet of more than 30 steamboats on the upper Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers, connections to military posts, Deadwood (gold mining), Dakota, Minnesota and Manitoba wheat crops, Hudson Bay Comapny, Walla Walla, Oregon Steam Navigation Company, etc. etc. "It is certain that what is known as the Sioux Indian country cannot be permanently pacified except by a railroad. The region, as the breeding nest of unceasing and costly wars, must be occupied by farms and towns. These cannot obtain even a foothold without the help of the Northern Pacific Railroad." Last two of the twenty pages are blank. Good.
