Title: Mary's Bower, Or, the Castle on the Glen; A Pastoral Drama, of Five Acts: founded on A Real Event in Scotland, about the end of the fifteenth century.
Description: Edinburgh: Printed by John..., and sold by all the Principal Booksellers..., 1811. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), 228 x 142 mms., pp. [5] 6 - 97 [98 Errata, 99 - 100 blank], disbound; several leaves creased, very slight tears in a few margins. The title alludes to Chatsworth House where Mary Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587) was incarcerated on several occasions, first in May 1560 and then in 1573, 1577, 1578 and 1581. Although the house in which she was kept no longer exists, the "bower" that she inhabited can still be seen. The play begins with a gardener and "Crichtoune" in convesation, shortly joined by Thomas and servants, awaiting a mysterious figure as night approaches [cue Hamlet], who reads a letter from one Flora Sinclair; and thus the pastoral drama is under way. OCLC locates copies in Glasgow, NLS; Chicago, Indiana, Ohio, UCLA, Yale; Waterloo.
