Mark Storey, in The Poetry of John Clare: A Critical Introduction, records that Cole wrote this as a challenge to replicate in verse what the painter would produce in a picture: "Cole is not a poet of [James] Grahame's calibre.... He is accordingly diffident to start with...even though Cole adopts the pentameter couplet as the vehicle for his observations."
