Large 8vo, 225 x 139 mms., pp. xiv, 390, including half-title, uncut, later half calf (probably mid 20th century), linen boards, black morocco label; title-page fore-edge and succeeding leaf 2 mms. shorter than rest of text, edges dust-soiled. Interest in the Crusades as a literary topic both in Britain and in the rest of Europe was fairly extensive. Michael John Horswell in his Ph. D. thesis,The Rise and Fall of British Crusader Medievalism c.1825-1945 reports that Sophie Cottin's Matilda and Malek Adhel, the Saracen, translated from French and published in London in 1809 and also that "other crusading novels also predated Scott's The Betrothed and The Talisman: Louisa Sidney Stanhope's The Crusaders (1820) and Barbara Hofland's Theodore, or The Crusaders (1821)." Scott also used the name "Matilda" in his long poem Rokeby (1813).
