Wherein is laid down the Method of Obtaining it Fine and Good Flavored, With every other useful Direction for Private Brewing, Management of the Cellar, &c. &c.
Description: Romsey: Printed for the Author, by J. S. Hollis; sold also by W. Richardson... [inter alia], 1797. 8vo (in 4s), 200 x 126 mms., pp. [4] 5 - 38 [39 - 40 blank], disbound; title-page dust-soiled. Ploughman indicates that the use of the thermometer is just coming into general practise in breweries and accordingly gives instructions for the home brewer without requiring what was then an expensive new technology. ESTC N22688 locates copies of this edition in Birmingham Central Libraries, Cambridge; Pennsylvania Van Pelt. I have not been able to trace a first edition, though Mr. Ploughman in "To The Public" on page [3] states that the rapid sale and "flattering reception" of the first edition "has encourage him to send forth a SECOND EDITION...." A further "second edition" appeared with a slightly different Romsey imprint IN 1798 (ESTC T230668: BL only OCLC adds Bristol); and a "third edition," dated 1800 came from Romsey again, but 48 pages (T191905; BL and Bodleian). A fourth edition printed by Hollis appeard in 1803 (Chicago only).
