Green Bookseller against the Muse, Charing Cross, [1730] FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 198 x 122 mms., engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, 61 (ex 62, lacking plate 12, supplied in photocopy) engraved plates, 15 numbered emblems and letterpress key printed in double column below; the final few plates are bound out of order, and the outer corners of all but the initial 13 leaves with recent paper repair, the final leaf laid down to verso, paper flaws to lower margin of plate 3 with tape repair to verso and small tear from lower edge of plate 4 with paper repair to verso: long closed tear with neat archival tape repair to plate 25, plate 26 overlaid and with heavy browning but contents otherwise generally fairly clean, lightly toned and with scattered spotting and finger marks, small arc of water staining out from lower few mms. of gutter. Bound in contemporary panelled calf, with recent reback, modern plain endpapers, 20th century ink and pencil notes to the upper fly leaf. The publisher, Thomas Green, appears to be responsible for this assemblage of emblematic engravings, maybe in imitation of the publication of Gay's Fables in 1728. There were nine later editions with the same plates, and in some editions introductions and commentaries were added.
