A very good copy, inscribed on recto of front free end-paper. "Mary Slee/ from her affectionate friend/ W. [?M] Marriott, [? illegible ]1841." John Marriott (1762 - 1797), a Quaker businessman and poet, was born in Edgend, a small village near Colne. He had a classical education, which is slightly reflected in the poems which are mostly on rural and bucolic themes; there is also a rather fulsome tribute to James Beattie, the Aberdonian philosopher and poet. He is often confused with the poet and Church of England clergyman, John Marriott (1780 - 1825). I have not been able to establish a connection between either the Quaker Marriott or the Church of England Marriot with the presenter of this volume to Miss Slee. Johnson: Provincial Poetry, 585.
