A fine copy with "Dall' Autore" on the top margin of the title-page, circular armorial bookplate on front paste-down end-paper. Thomas James Mathias (1753/4 - 1835) is probably best-known for his Pursuits of Literature, or, What you will, published in four dialogues 1794 - 1797. He was a gifted Italilan scholar and probably studied Italian at Cambridge; he moved to Italy in 1817. He translated poems by Mark Akenside, William Mason, John Armstrong, among others, into Italian. There were several subsequent editions of this text.
