Description: A Londres, Aux depends de Paul & Isaak Vaillant..., 1707. 2 volumes. 12mo, 155 x 86 mms., pp. [9], 10 - 181 [182 - 187 table, 188 - 192 blank]; [vi], 103 [104 blank]; [11], 12 - 119 [120 table]. Volume 2: [7], 8 - 160 - 167 Table, 168 blank]; [9], 10 - 150 [151 - 156 Table], title-pages in red and black, and with general title-page as half-title in each volume, 5 engraved frontispieces, and one folding engraved plate in Entretiens, contemporary calf, spines richly gilt in compartments, title in gilt on spines; some slight wear to binding, but a very good set. Fontenelle, who lived to the ripe old age of 99 (1657 - 1757), dying only one month short of his 100th birthday (unlikely to have had a telegram from the King, however), was an exceptionally gifted writer, at home with scientific, moral, and narrative works, as well as poetry. One of the oldest jokes about old age is attributed to him: "When, in his late nineties he met the beautiful Madame Helvétius, he reportedly told her, 'Ah Madame, if only I were eighty again'!" This appears to be a made-up set, as each work was published separately; the works were probably printed in the Netherlands.
