Title: The Complete Correspondent: Consisting of Original Letters, adapted to every age and situation in life, and on the most interesting topics: Together with various Forms of Business and Compliment, and the best Directions for Writing Letters With Ease, Elegance, and Correctness; to which are added, Specimens of Real Correspondence, From the best Writers in the English Language, and Translations from the Latin and French.
Description: London: Printed for W. Simpkin and R. Marshall..., [1821]. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 157 x 95 mms., pp. iv, 176, engraved frontispiece (By Coutts after Burney) dated 1821, contemporary roan, gilt spine (faded); corners a little worn, but a good to very good copy. There was a distinct market and vogue for this sort of book in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and this is only one of several examples. Given the number of solecisms one encounters in blogs, letters, and comments on the web, I would like to see the following admonition from the first page enshrined in Google: "Orthography (or correct spelling ) is of the highest importance; ignorance in this particular is always considered a mark of ill-breedinjg, defective education, or natural stupidity." Copac locates only the copy in the BL; OCLC locates copies in Yale and Oregon State.
