Description: A Paris, Par les Libraries Associes, 1759. 5 volumes. 12mo, 140 x 75 mms., pp. [ii]], [3] - 371 [372 - 375 index, 376 blank]; [iv], 455 [456 - 458 index]; [iv], 344 [345 - 348 index]; [iv], 341 [342 - 346 index]; [iv], 338 [ 339 - 341 index, 342 - 345 Approbation, 346 blank], including half-titles, title-pages in red and black, 4 engraved plates in volume 1, 8 engraved plates in volume 2, 4 engraved plates in volume 3, 5 engraved plates in volume 4, 4 engraved plates in volume 5, with the armorial bookplate of William Middleton, Esqr. Crowfield Hall, Suffolk on the front paste-down end-paper of volumes 3 and 4, occasional contemporary correction in ink to text, pencil marginalia consisting of a florid "H" or a double ampersand, contemporary lightly speckled calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments, red leather labels, tops of spines slightly chipped, some other slight wear to bindings, but generally a very good and attractive set. The bookplate is that of William Middleton (1748 - 1829), sometime M. P. and described as "a country gentleman devoted to agricultural pursuits ... the improvement of his estates and the employment of the poor...." Lesage (1668 - 1747) published Gil Blas between 1715 and 1735; it proved to be very popular and was quickly translated into English.
