Crowfield Hall, Suffolk on the front paste-down end-paper of volumes 3 and 4, occasional contemporary correction in ink to text, pencil marginalia consisting of a florid "H" or a double ampersand, contemporary lightly speckled calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments, red leather labels, tops of spines slightly chipped, some other slight wear to bindings, but generally a very good and attractive set. The bookplate is that of William Middleton (1748 - 1829), sometime M. P. and described as "a country gentleman devoted to agricultural pursuits ... the improvement of his estates and the employment of the poor...." Lesage (1668 - 1747) published Gil Blas between 1715 and 1735; it proved to be very popular and was quickly translated into English.
