Title: The Secret History of the Reigns of K. Charles II. and K. James II.
Description: [?London] Printed in the Year 1690. ?FIRST EDITION, first issue. 12mo, 147 x 83 mms., pp. [iv], 96, 87 - 134, 145 - 214, with pages 166 and 167 correctly numbered, with two final blank leaves, advert on the verso of the title-page, contemporary sheepskin; no paste-down end-papers, upper and lower front joint slightly wormed, other minor wear to binding, but a good copy with the inscription "H. Higley ...to Miss Andrews" on the top margin of the first front free end-paper, and on the verso of the front board (no end-paper), "Thos. Archer his Book/ January 28th 1761." ESTC notes that it is "sometimes attributed to Nathaniel Crouch (who employed the pseudonyms R. B., Robert Burton, and Richard Burton) and to John Phillips." This was the first volume in what became the series published as Secret History of the Four Last Monarchs of Great Britain, though greatly altered when it appeared in that series. It is a rather anti-Catholic narrative o the reign of those two monarchs. ESTC R 9835.
