The first edition of this popular work was published in 1874, and there were several other reprints during the 19th century. The "Great Tone Poets" are almost all German or Austrian: Bach, Handel, Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven, Weber, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and, curiously, Rossini.
