"It was as a musical journalist, however, that Chorley achieved lasting significance. For thirty-five years he published vivid weekly reviews of performances and columns of musical 'gossip', containing huge quantities of first- and second-hand information about composers and performers on the continent and elsewhere. His initial touchstones of contemporary greatness were Rossini and Mendelssohn. He prided himself on being years ahead of his British contemporaries in comprehending and proclaiming the significance of operas by Meyerbeer and Gounod.
