The journalist and author Henry Sutherland Edwards (1828 - 1906) began his career writing for Pasquin a rival to Punch and later produced a drama, Mephistopheles, or, An Ambassador from Below. Having been educated in France, he was fluent in French, and later added Russian to his languages when he married in Moscow the daughter of a Scottish engineer working in Russia. He also wrote music history and criticism. A History of Opera (2 vols.) appeared in 1862; The Lyrical Drama and Rossini and his School, both in 1881; together with lives of Rossini (1869) and and of the tenor Sims Reeves (1881). The present book is a page-turner for those interested in the anecdotal lives of famous sopranos.
