Description: Glasguae: In Aedibus Academicis Excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis..., 1763. 3 volumes. 12mo, 158 x 96 mms., pp. iv], 292; [ii], 296; [ii], 265 [266 blank, 267 - 268 adverts], contemporary calf, gitl border on covers, spines gilt to a crossed arrows motif, two black leather labels (one chipped) on volume 1; lacking labels on other volumes, front joint volume 3 cracked (but firm), other joints with some wear, spines rubbed, tops and bases slightly chipped, a so-so set with the armorial bookplate of John Wightwick on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume, and the autograph and date "Henry James Sparks/ 1857" on the top margin of each title-page. The German scholar Johann Friedrick Gronovious (1611 - 1671) published his edition of Plautus in 1664. Editions of Plautus began to appear as early as 1472, and his comedies have been a source for many dramatic translations and adaptations since the Renaissance. Gaskill 424.
