De Laume's tract is the earliest to have been printed, appearing in 1704, with 18 further editions in the 18th century; the editor signs the preface "D. F.", apparently Daniel Defoe. The preface to an edition published in in 1706 was the first to be signed "D. Foe," and the work appears in the Defoe canon. However, according to the Advertisement preceding the Preface, "The edition from which this is printed, is that of 1733," but the author of the Advertisement does not identify himself.
