With numerous contemporary annotations in pencil and ink. Girdlestone (1797 - 1881), the Biblical scholar and politician, seems to have been the senior partnership in this enterprise: "Mr. Girdlestone is answerable for the omissions in the text, and for the annotations of a moral and religious character, the responsibility of the classical department resting with Mr. Osborne." The volume was to be one of a series of Greek and Latin classics "to be adapted to the use of students by the omission of offensive words and passages." Well, that's a relief.
