Brydges (1762 - 1837), like many of the antiquaries of his period, reprinted lost or forgotten works of English literature, with commentaries and notes. In the production of the later volumes, he had the assistance of Joseph Haslewood and Thomas Park. This was the first of his antiquarian anthologies and was followed by three others, The British Bibliographer (1810 - 1814), Restituta (1816 - 1818), and Res Literariae (1821 - 1822).
