Charles Symmons (1749 - 1826) first published this work in 1806 as part of a seven-volume edition of Milton's works; the first separate publication was in 1810. This new third edition has been revised and amended. Previous editions had been criticised, "but my assailants have been of a size beneath my notice" (Preface, dated 25 February 1822).
