The abbé Chateauneuf, who died in 1708, was a member of a prosperous and influential family, and he is perhaps remembered by posterity more for having been one of the lovers of Ninon d'Enclos and a godfather to Voltaire than for his contributions to musicology. Ninon d'Enclos appears in the "dialogue" as de Leontium. The work celebrates the invention of a dulcimer by Pantaleon Hebenstreit. The work was prepared for publication by Jacques Morabin.and was reprinted in 1735.
