Sargent was prominent in the establishment and affairs of the United States, from his battles in the Revolutionary War to his appointment as the first governor of the Louisiana Territory. Marmontel's Memoires d'un Pere pour servir a l'instruction de ses enfans was first published in 1804, five years after his death in 1799. The English title perhaps more accurately describes the contents than the French title, though it does contain many details about his own childhood, as well as the history of his literary life. Sainte-Beauve said of Marmontel that he "est au premier rang parmi les bons littérateurs du XVIIIe siècle ."
