Mason (1706 - 1763) came to prosody by way of the church, becoming Presbyterian minister in Dorking in 1729. His first non-secular work was An Essay on Elocution (1748), followed by this work and his Essay on the Power and Harmony of Prosaic Numbers,also in the same year and also with a second edition in 1761.
