Pemberton..., 1741. 8vo, pp. 375 [376 adverts], contemporary calf, morocco label; top of spine chipped, spine slightly creased, front joint slightly cracked. With the autograph "Mary Townshend" on the front paste-down end-paper; she is possibly the wife or daughter of Edward Townshend, the fourth son of Charles Townshend (1674 - 1738), second Viscount Townshend. Pascal's Pensees is the largest fragment of a projected "Apology" for the Christian religion that he conceived in the last years of his life. The work was first published in 1670, eight years after Pascal's death. Kennet's translation was first published in 1704.
