The identity of the translator is unknown. The Monthly Review said of the work, "Perhaps the history of literature does not present so extraordinary an instance of the enterprise which mind alone will attempt, unassisted by art, and unimproved by instruction." Oxford University Press reissued the translation, revised by Eric Reginald Vincent, in 1961 in their Library of Italian Classics.
