Description: Monachii apud Corneliu Leyserviu Electoral Typ: 1630 FIRST EDITION. 24mo, 120 x 63 mms., foliated 4, [2], 48, 48, 48, 48, 48, 48, 290, engraved title-page engraved vignettes on the recto of virtually every leaf, occupying three quarters of the page, contemporary panelled vellum, one working clasp (of two), bookplate of Walter u[nd] Else Stein, on front paste-down end-paper, several other contemporary and slightly later inscriptions and ownership autographs; text very slightly fingered in a few places, spine slightly creased, binding slightly soiled, but a good to very good copy of the first volume of this emblem book. The second volume was issued the same year. The Austrian Jesuit Andreas Brunner (1589-1650) compiled what is basically a book of prayer for the months of January to June, illustrated with fine engravings entirely on, not surprisingly, Catholic liturgy. A professor of history at universities in Dilligen and Freiburg, he undertook the work and research for this volume and its second part, covering the months of July to December, having accepted a commission from the Elector Maximilian. From Wikipedia: "Andreas Brunner entered the Society of Jesus in Landsberg am Lech in 1605 at the age of 16 and then studied at the University of Ingolstadt . After his studies he worked as a professor of ethics and university preacher in Dillingen (1619/20) and Freiburg im Breisgau . From 1622 he worked as the electoral historiographer and president of the Marian Congregation in Munich and from 1637 as a preacher in Innsbruck. During the Thirty Years' War he was abducted by the Swedes from Munich to Augsburg in 1632 and held captive as a hostage until 1635. As a Jesuit provincial he traveled to Rome in 1649 to elect the general of the order. Andreas Brunner's main work is the Annales virtutis et fortunae Boiorum commissioned by Elector Maximilian . His predecessor and teacher in history was Matthäus Rader SJ. Andreas Brunner had to end the presentation of Bavarian history in 1314, since his presentation of the reign of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria and his dispute with Pope John XXII. met with opposition from the leadership of the order. On the basis of the material he had collected, the Annales of Nicolaus Burgundus and Johannes Vervaux SJ were continued." I did not find an earlier edition in OCLC, but other listings suggest that the first edition was published in 1623.
