Hawker (sometime Vicar of Morwenstow), by his son-in-law, C. E. Byles, with two sketches by the Earl of Carlisle, lithographs by J. Ley Pethybridge, and reproductions from portraits, photographs, etc. Colour frontispiece, 37 monochrome plates; 689 pages + ads. for 2 of Hawker's books. Dark red cloth, gilt monogram and spine titles, gilt top edge. About half the spine is missing and the rest splitting; corners worn; quite a bit of foxing. Previous owner's inscription dated 1905 (address Mousehill Cottage). On the lower half of the title page is pasted a part of a postcard showing Irene Margaret Byles, Edith Marian Hawker Byles, Rosalind Morwenna Byles, the grandchildren of Robert Stephen Hawker, with the quote "Blue eyes melt: dark eyes burn" Also included v. small newspaper cutting announcing marriage, on Dec. 23, 1936, of James Garven to Marian Hawker, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C. E. Byles and granddaughter of the late Rev. Robert Stephen Hawker, of Morwenstow. Includes a chapter on the Trelawny ballad. Heavy; may require extra shipping to some locations. Fair/No Jacket.
