Padre Garces lst came to Kern county in the company of De Anza the explorer who had heard of a pass across the Sierras from Garces who had found it in his wandering in the southwest ministering to the various tribes west of the Colorado River. On January 8, 1774, Anza set out with 34 men, including Francisco Garcés and native scouts, to travel at least as far as Mission San Gabriel. Anza went on to the north and returned to San Gabriel, and with Garces returned to Sonora to gather settlers. On February 14, 1776, Anza set out from Tubac with a group of 240 men, women and children. With them went friars Francisco Garcés, Tomás Eixarch and Pedro Font. Their guide was again Sebastián Taraval, and three Indian interpreters also accompanied them. This was the start of his adventures in Tulares (Great Central Valley) discovered by Don Pedro Fages several years before. A great slice of California and Kern Country History. Good/Poor.
