Extensively illustrated with b/w engravings by Charles Parrocel. This book first appeared in Paris in 1729, where Gueriniere had his famous ecuyer. Alois Podhajsky, late director of the Spanish Riding School: "the most revolutionary book on riding of all times"; Sylvia Loch: "If the word greatness is to be accorded to only one of the individual Masters whose work is reviewed in this book...Gueriniere must achieve this accolade. This committed equestrian inspired the world of classical dressage...has become the authoritative bible of the dressage world...It is a lucid compilation of all the methods and principles of the French Masters to that date...to this day, is is still widely quoted, and remains the source by which most, if not all, equestrian arguments may be settled". This tome is divided into a treatise on the nature and conformation of horses, including information on 18th century horse care, shoeing and tack; a section on veterinary medicine; and a glossary. The foreword by modern master Paul Belasik: as a single individual he transcended even his own France. He is mentioned in practically every book on dressage in one way or another. He is historically crucial to the development of dressage in his actions as a modernising arbitrator...his words are practical and still relevant. He also helped to develop the shoulder-in, along with William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle [another notable equestrian authority]. The shoulder-in is one of the favorite moves for myself and my horse, a great base from which to move on to other work. A gorgeous, wonderful book, magnificently translated by a horseman, who brings the passion behind the words to life. I cherish my copy of this book, and any serious fan of dressage will need to include this volume in their collection. Very oversized, 6#. HVMM**. ; B&W Illustrations; 8 3/4 x 11 1/4; 330+ pages; DJ in a mylar cover.. New in New dust jacket .
