Elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) in 1954. In 1959, he was the third recipient of the AAAS' Emerson-Thoreau Medal, previously awarded to only Robert Frost and T. S. Book plate inside front cover is from Michigan State Library and has an extra piece of information printed on it 'damaged in the state office building fire February, 1951.' minor foxing to some pages.
