Illustrated with b/w pictures from the original publication. Translated from the original French. De la Gueriniere [1688-1751], became the 'ecuyer du Roi' in 1715. In 1730 he was named master of the Royal stables at the Tuilleries, founded by de Pluvinel, Louis XIII's riding teacher. "This volume comprises only the pertinent chapters I-XVIII of the second part of 'Ecole de Cavalerie', entitled The Method of Training Horses According to the Different Ways in Which They Will Be Used'. Henri L. M. VanSchaik mentions that '[la Gueriniere's] reputation as an extraordinary teacher had become international and that he received pupils from all over Europe...In contrast to most of his predecessors, la Gueriniere was evidently a very methodical man...a strict scheme and stays with it...he invented the shoulder in....it was the great riding master La Gueriniere who produced the most revolutionary book on riding of all times...based it on simplicity and facts, in order to be completely understood by his readers'. For these reasons de la Gueriniere is considered to be the Father of French Equitation and the Father of Modern Dressage. His teachings and methods are still considered the standard to be used and met, well over 250 years after he wrote them down.
