Author: (GOLDEN HIND PRESS). BACMEISTER, Ernst Title: The Christmas Tree Auction. Translated [from German] by Herbert Kleist. Wood Engravings by John DePol. (With handwritten dedication by Kleist).
Description: (Madison, NJ, Golden Hind Press, 1954). Original wrappers. 20 p. Hand-set from the Weiss Antiqua and printed by private printer Arthur Rushmore in burgundy, brown and black on handmade tinted Archer paper in 250 copies. Wood engravings and initial (see image) by John DePol. With a handwritten dedication by translator Herbert Kleist 'For Doug Bryant'. Christmas gift from Arthur W. Rushmore (1883-1955) and his Golden Hind Press. Rushmore was for a long time head of design for the major American publisher Harper Bros., but he also had his own private printing press. In doing so, he fits in the tradition of the great American typographers of the interwar period, Frederic W. Goudy, Bruce Rogers and Daniel Berkeley Updike, who all enjoyed their own presses.
