Bookplate of Dr. J.A. van Praag. 20th century catalogue entry pasted in at first flyleaf. Bookblock is loosening a bit, but the inside is very clean. "Argenis. Newest edition. With a key, that is, an elucidation of the proper names, not published before". And indeed: 'Hippophilus' = King of Spain, "Hyanisbe" = Queen Elizabeth. Barclay (1580-1621), a Scotsman grown up in France, is considered one of the last humanists, 'un des derniers feux de l’humanisme'. This is his main work, an extensive novel and mirror of political morals. First Elzevir edition.
