WOOLLS, William. - Miscellanies in Prose and Verse.

Title: Miscellanies in Prose and Verse.
Description: Sydney, Evans 1838. Octavo untrimmed in (original?) unlettered cloth. Foxed but still a rather good copy. A couple of marginal annotations in earlier pages, presumably by George Chisholm whose name is on the title, many of the later pages still unopened. ¶ Woolls' claim to a significant place in Australia's poetic history is pretty feeble but fortunately most of this book consists of his essays. It is, in fact, styled as Australia's first book of essays (more properly one of two - James Martin's 'Australian Sketch-book' appeared in the same year). The essays range across the abstract and universal (intemperance, hope, death) and the practical and parochial (educational errors in Australia, the establishment of the colony).
