Title: A Vindication of Phrenology.
Description: London, Chatto 1894. Octavo publisher's cloth (a touch discoloured); 428pp, portrait & 44 illustrations. A few spots at the ends. ¶ Williams was by trade a mathematical instrument maker, by bent a chemist and inventor and mostly by profession an educator and reformer (the founder of the Secular School with George Combe). He wrote extensively on such subjects as the chemistry of cooking, iron and steel, manufacturing and his travels but couldn't begin this work until 1889, using a fifty years' collection of materials, and it was published posthumously. Mr Williams' phrenology was the 'old phrenology of Gall and his scientific followers', the solid truth of which he was more than ever convinced after a lifetime's study. As probably the last member of the last generation of progressive phrenologists, here he offers what is probably the best summation of the science's century of success and controversy.
