Title: The Tailless Batrachians of the Japanese Empire
Description: Nishigahara, Tokyo, Japan: Imperial Agricultural Experiment Station, 1931. First edition. Pp. (2), 215; 29 full page plates (17 plates in color of frogs, 4 plates in black-and-white photos of tadpoles, 8 plates of anatomical line-drawings of frogs), 97 text-figures (mostly line-drawings). Later dark green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, dark green endpapers, lg 4to (12 x 9 inches). This classic Japanese monograph was first published in the Japanese language in 1930 under the title “Monograph of Japanese Tailless Batrachians.” In 1931 Okada published the English version of the monograph, offered here, under a slightly different title “The Tailless Batrachians of the Japanese Empire.” As this English edition was published for the foreign community, it is interesting to note that the term “Japanese Empire” was used. In 1931, the Japanese Empire included Formosa (now Taiwan) and Korea. From the research collection of herpetologist Lauren E. Brown with his signature on the title page. The green cloth binding is in as new condition, the contents are very bright and clean, a near fine copy..
