It documents the amphibians of the Dutch East Indies today known as the island nation of Indonesia. According to Adler (vol. 2, pg. 133) it was written as a companion to Nelly de Rooij's two volume set 'Reptiles of the Indo-Australian Archipelago' (1915-1917). Van Kampen's work covers 47 genera and 256 species of frogs and caecilians. From the research collection of Illinois State University herpetologist Lauren E.
