Description: Wien: Karl Gerold's Sohn, 1867. First edition. Pp. 94 + 3 lithograph plates + pp. 70 + 5 lithograph plates.  One-half powder-blue leather, spine with three raised bands that are bordered in gilt, spine is horizontally lettered in gilt in two compartments, over blue marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers, the original printed tan front wrapper is bound in place, 4to.  From: Reise der Österreichischen Fregatte “Novara” un die Erde in den Jahren 1857, 1858, 1859, Wissenschaftthicher Theil.- Zoologischer Theil., volume 1.  This is the author's most significant herpetological work.  ""Steindachner is best known as an ichthyologist, but he published nearly 60 herpetological titles (1862-1917) including one major work, the amphibian and reptile section of the circumnavigation by the Austrian frigate Novara.  This monograph reviewed a collection of nearly 1000 specimens from along the ship's route in South America, Africa, Ceylon, Java, China, Australia and New Zealand"" (Adler, 1989, volume 1).  See also Nissen ZBI 4750.  No ownership marks. The original printed tan front wrapper, bound in place, shows some mild foxing, the remaining pages and plates and the fine leather binding are very bright and clean, a near fine copy in a beautiful binding..
